Dungarvan, a small coastal town on the southern coast of Ireland lends itself to being the location of an energetic and inspiring camera club. The thriving historical town located on a bay is surrounded by natural beauty; mountains, sea, rivers, woods and forests. Fine examples of these have been captured by our members and can be viewed through the Gallery alongside their other areas of interest. Each year the club’s chairperson adopts a theme to help focus members work. The current year’s theme is “From perception to Paper”. Monthly and quarterly competitions within the club are also themed and encourage members to look at their surroundings with a watchful eye and to interpret them in a unique and refreshing way. Recent themes have been “Yound and Old” and “Cold”. The competitions are the highlight of our monthly meetings as they motivate, inspire and raise the standards of our photography. Members vote on what they conceive to be the winning photographs of the month and points are allocated to the photographers who have been given votes. In this way individuals accumulate points for their years’ work. The member with the greatest points at the end of the year is awarded the title Photographer of the Year. Our current Photographer of the Year is John Pelham. The beautiful Photographer of the Year Trophy presented each year to the winner was handcrafted and donated to the club by former club member Eamon Terry of Críostal na Rinne. Apart from the club competitions various activities are made available to members throughout the year including workshops, fieldtrips and lectures. Some of these are presented by club members and some by visiting photographers such as Tom Lawlor, Tony Murray, Seamus Costelloe, Anthony Hobbs and others. Such activities would not be possible without the funding and support received through two local sources. We receive a grant from the Waterford County Council – Arts Grants Scheme 2009. The club very much appreciates the interest shown by Waterford County Councils Arts Officer. Generous sponsorship is received by the club from Murray’s Pharmacy, Grattan Square, Dungarvan. The club is very grateful for the support from this local business as it has enabled us to widen our activities and also provides us with a top class processing service from their Fuji Digital Image Service. Another local business providing the club with an excellent service is Dreoílín Glass. The mounting and framing carried out by Pat Ahearne is second to none. The highlight of the club’s calendar is our Annual Exhibition. Starting at the end of July this event is held for two weeks in An Leabharlann, Dungarvan’s public library. Located on The Quay this is a terrific venue to exhibit our work with ever helpful and interested staff. The web site hosts some of the prints that have previously been exhibited by our members. Enjoy browsing through our individual members’ albums and thank you for visiting. Comments are welcome. Meetings: 1st. Tuesday of every month at the Park Hotel Dungarvan at 8.00p.m. Go raibh maith agat.
